What is Menopause?

Menopause is a normal physiological occurrence in women, usually happening between the ages of 45 and 55, indicating the cessation of menstruation and fertility. Throughout menopause, the ovaries progressively decrease the production of estrogen and progesterone, resulting in a variety of physical and emotional transformations.

Common symptoms include

Sudden feelings of warmth, often accompanied by flushing and sweating, which can occur throughout the body, particularly in the face and chest. Hot flashes vary in intensity from mild to severe and can interfere with daily routines and disrupt sleep patterns.

Episodes of intense sweating during sleep, often causing damp clothing and bedding. Night sweats can lead to sleep disturbances and may contribute to feelings of fatigue and discomfort during the day.

Fluctuations in mood, including irritability, anxiety, sadness, and frustration, which can vary in intensity and duration. Mood swings may be triggered by hormonal changes during menopause and can affect daily interactions and emotional well-being.

Reduced moisture and lubrication in the vaginal area, leading to discomfort, itching, burning, and pain during sexual intercourse. Vaginal dryness is caused by declining estrogen levels and can impact sexual satisfaction and overall quality of life.

Disruptions in sleep quality and duration, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and early morning awakenings. Changes in sleep patterns may be related to hormonal fluctuations, night sweats, and other menopausal symptoms, contributing to feelings of fatigue and irritability during the day.

It’s crucial to understand menopause and its effects for women to manage this transition effectively. It’s a significant phase of life that requires careful attention and personalized care to ensure women navigate it with comfort and confidence.

Once the treatment plan is established, our team guides patients through the implementation process, providing detailed instructions and support every step of the way.

Throughout the treatment process, our specialists closely monitor patients’ progress and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed to ensure optimal results and symptom relief.

Menopause FAQs

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs in women, usually between the ages of 45 and 55. It marks the end of menstruation and fertility.

Common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, changes in sleep patterns, and irregular periods.

The duration of menopause varies for each woman but typically lasts for several years. The transition into menopause, known as perimenopause, can last for about 4-8 years, while menopause itself is considered complete when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be safe and effective for managing menopausal symptoms when used appropriately and under the guidance of a healthcare provider. However, it’s important to talk about the risks and benefits of HRT with your doctor, especially in relation to your individual health profile.

Book an appointment with Gwinnett OB/GYN when menopause symptoms begin affecting your daily life, sleep or mental wellbeing. You do not need to wait until symptoms become severe. Early evaluation allows your provider to confirm the stage of your transition, rule out other causes for your symptoms and discuss treatment options before symptoms worsen.

Menopause is typically diagnosed based on symptoms and the absence of a period for 12 consecutive months. A blood test measuring FSH and estradiol levels can provide supporting information, particularly if you are under 45 or your symptoms are unclear. Your provider at Gwinnett OB/GYN will determine whether bloodwork is appropriate based on your age and symptom pattern.

Hormone therapy is most appropriate for women who are in the early years of menopause and in good cardiovascular health. For women who are younger than 60 or within 10 years of their final period, current guidance generally supports the use of hormone therapy for bothersome symptoms in the absence of specific contraindications. Your provider will review your personal health history, risk factors and goals to determine whether hormone therapy is appropriate for you.

Non-hormonal options for managing menopause symptoms include low-dose antidepressants, gabapentin and certain blood pressure medications that have shown effectiveness for hot flashes. Vaginal estrogen applied locally may be appropriate for some patients even when systemic hormone therapy is not. Lifestyle adjustments including sleep hygiene, dietary changes and regular physical activity can also reduce symptom burden. Your provider at Gwinnett OB/GYN will discuss all available options at your consultation.

At a menopause consultation at Gwinnett OB/GYN, your provider will review your symptom history, current medications, medical history and family history. The visit may include a physical exam, bloodwork and a discussion of your treatment options. You will have time to ask questions and decide together with your provider which next steps are right for your situation.

Response time to menopause treatment varies by symptom and treatment type. Some patients notice improvement in hot flashes within a few weeks of starting hormone therapy. Vaginal dryness and sleep changes may take longer to improve. Your provider will schedule a follow-up visit to assess your response and adjust the plan if needed.
Yes. Pregnancy is possible during perimenopause because ovulation can still occur, even with irregular periods. Women in perimenopause who do not wish to become pregnant should continue using contraception until they have gone 12 consecutive months without a period. Talk to your provider at Gwinnett OB/GYN about contraceptive options that are appropriate during this stage.
Yes. Pap smear guidelines recommend continued screening until age 65 for most women, with the option to stop after that if prior results have been normal. Annual well-woman exams remain important after menopause for breast health, cardiovascular screening, bone density monitoring and ongoing symptom management. Gwinnett OB/GYN provides comprehensive annual exams for women at every stage of life.
Yes. Gwinnett OB/GYN accepts new patients who are already receiving hormone therapy. Call the office to schedule an appointment and bring your current prescriptions, dosing information and any recent lab results. Your new provider will review your current regimen and continue, adjust or discuss alternatives based on your health history and how well the current treatment is working.
Menopause consultations and well-woman exams are generally covered by insurance. Coverage for hormone therapy prescriptions depends on your specific plan and whether the medication is included in your formulary. Contact your insurance provider to confirm your benefits. Our billing office can assist with questions about services at Gwinnett OB/GYN.

OB Billing Changes for 2027

If you are scheduled to deliver in 2027, changes to CMS billing guidelines will affect how your maternity care is billed.

WHAT'S CHANGING

WHAT'S NOT CHANGING

Your care will not change – only the way it is billed. You will continue to receive the same prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care from your OBGYN team.
